Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram (tĭr'vənŭn'təpr`əm), formerly Trivandrum (trĭvăn`drəm), city (1991 pop. 826,255), capital of Kerala state, SW India, a port on the Arabian Sea. The city is a transportation hub. Manufactures include refined sugar, textiles, and handicrafts. The city was the capital of the former state of Travancore and of Travancore-Cochin.

Thiruvananthapuram

 formerly Trivandrum

Seaport (pop., 2001: 744,983), capital of Kerala state, southwestern India. The community became prominent when it was made capital of the kingdom of Travancore in 1745. A large fort contains several palaces and a Vaishnava temple, which is a noted pilgrimage centre. Its cultural amenities include the University of Kerala (1937).
