Thomas, (Martha) Carey (1857–1935) educator, feminist; born in Baltimore, Md. She was dean (1885–1908) and president (1894–1922) of the new Bryn Mawr College, where she pioneered graduate study for women. By insisting on rigorous academic standards, she led the drive to improve standards of higher education generally. Imposing the condition of women's admission, Thomas helped found Johns Hopkins Medical School. How to thank TFD for its existence?
