Walker, Thomas (1715–94) physician, explorer, legislator; born in King and Queen County, Va. After practicing as a doctor he became interested in seeking out new land for speculation. As chief agent for the Loyal Land Company, he led explorers into present-day Kentucky (1750–51). He was a guardian for Thomas Jefferson and, as a member of the Virginia Committee of Safety (1776), took an active role in advancing the American Revolution.
