Thompson, Smith

Thompson, Smith (1768–1843) Supreme Court justice; born in Amenia, N.Y. He served the New York legislature (1800–02) and the state supreme court (1802–18). President Monroe named him secretary of the navy (1818–23) and to the U.S. Supreme Court (1823–43). An antinationalist, he often dissented from the majority of the court.
