Thompson, Stith (1885–1976) folklorist; born in Bloomfield, Ky. At Indiana University (1921–55) he created a preeminent center for folklore studies. He established folklore as an academic discipline and founded the Folklore Institutes of America. Among his numerous publications his major contribution was the seminal Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (6 vols. 1932–36, revised 1955–58), which catalogues all the recurrent subjects, characters, themes, etc., in the folklore of the world.
