thrombocyte: see blood clotting blood clotting, process by which the blood coagulates to form solid masses, or clots. In minor injuries, small oval bodies called platelets, or thrombocytes, tend to collect and form plugs in blood vessel openings.

Small, colourless, irregular blood cell crucial in coagulation. Produced in bone marrow and stored in the spleen, platelets accumulate to block a cut in a blood vessel and provide a surface for fibrin strands to adhere to, contract to pull the strands together, and take part in the conversion sequence of coagulation factors. They also store and transport several chemicals.


thrombocyte [′thräm·bə‚sīt]
(histology)
One of the minute protoplasmic disks found in vertebrate blood; thought to be fragments of megakaryocytes. Also known as blood platelet; platelet.
