Thun (t
n), city (1990 est. pop. 37,700), Bern canton, central Switzerland, on the Aare River, where it flows out of the Lake of Thun. Machinery, watches, pottery, and cheese are made there. Of interest are two castles, the 16th-century town hall, and the historical museum. The Lake of Thun, c.20 sq mi (52 sq km), is picturesquely situated at the foot of the Bernese Alps. Thun 1. a town in central Switzerland, in Bern canton on Lake Thun. Pop.: 40 377 (2000) 2. a lake in central Switzerland, formed by a widening of the Aar River. Length: about 17 km (11 miles). Width: 3 km (2 miles) Thun a city in Switzerland, in Bern Canton, on the Aare River, near the Lake of Thun. Population, 37,100 (1974). Thun has food processing (mainly cheese), watchmaking, and the manufacture of metal products, industrial equipment, and synthetic crystals. Thun is also a tourist center.
