In west-central WA at the southern end of Puget Sound, southwest of Tacoma; organized Jan 12, 1852 (prior to statehood) from Lewis County. Name Origin: For Samuel Royal Thurston (1816-54), first delegate to Congress from the Oregon territory (1849-51).

    On the northeastern border of NE, south of Sioux City, IA; organized as Blackbird County Mar 7, 1865 from Burt County; name changed in 1889. Name Origin: For John Mellen Thurston (1847-1916), U.S. senator from NE (1895-1901), active in establishing the county. Originally named for either Chief Blackbird of the Omaha Indians, or Black Bird, for their mythological Thunder Bird.
