Cheese Fly
(Piophila casei), an insect of the family Piophilidae of the order Diptera. The body is black and shiny, with a length up to 4.5 mm. The fly is found everywhere and is especially common in fishing regions. The females deposit 40–120 eggs on the surface of salted fish or, less often, on old cheese, bacon, and other foodstuffs. When ingested, the larvae cause acute intestinal disturbances in man. Control measures include treatment of premises with insecticides, steam, or bleaching powder.
