Tijuana (tēhwä`nä), city (1990 pop. 698,752), Baja California state, NW Mexico, just south of the U.S. border. It is a gaudy border resort, noted for its racetracks and bullfights. An irrigated agricultural area surrounds the city. During the prohibition era Tijuana gained fame as a wide-open town. It expanded considerably in the wake of a booming tourist trade after World War II, and again in recent years as the border area has become increasingly industrialized. Hundreds of maquiladoras maquiladoras , Mexican assembly plants that manufacture finished goods for export to the United States. The maquiladoras are generally owned by non-Mexican corporations.

Tijuana

City (pop., 2000: 1,148,681), northwestern Baja California, Mexico. It lies on the Tecate River near the Pacific Ocean, 12 mi (19 km) south of San Diego, Calif., U.S. It originated as a ranch settlement on a land grant in 1862 and developed as a border resort with gambling casinos. In the 20th century it became the main entry point to Mexico for U.S. tourists. It has many U.S.-owned assembly plants as well as food-processing plants and breweries.

Tijuana 

a city in northwestern Mexico, in Baja California. Population, 363,200 (1974). Tijuana, a major transportation junction, carries on border trade with the USA. It is the center of an irrigated agricultural region where cotton, wheat, and tomatoes are grown. Industries include food processing, cotton ginning, and the manufacture of tobacco products. Branches of US companies are located in Tijuana.
