tide gate [′tīd ‚gāt]
(civil engineering)
A restricted passage through which water runs with great speed due to tidal action.
An opening through which water may flow freely when the tide sets in one direction, but which closes automatically and prevents the water from flowing in the other direction when the direction of flow is reversed.
