Tikhonovich, Nikolai Nikolaevich 

Born Jan. 9 (21), 1872, in Kharkov; died June 17, 1952, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1947).

Tikhonovich graduated from the University of Kharkov in 1897. He was a staff member of the Geological Committee from 1904 to 1933. In 1940 he became affiliated with the Moscow Geological Prospecting Trust, which was called the Moscow Branch of the All-Union Geological Prospecting Institute from 1947 to 1953. From 1943 to 1952 he was a professor at the Moscow Petroleum Institute.

Tikhonovich’s main works dealt with petroleum geology. He engaged in hydrogeological exploration in the southern Ural Region and carried out geological research on Sakhalin, in the Emba River basin, in eastern Kazakhstan, and in the Northern Caucasus. He made valuable contributions to the geotectonic and paleogeographic study of the Timan-Pechora Oil-Gas Basin and to research on the deep-lying structure and oil content of the Devonian strata of the Russian Platform.

Tikhonovich was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
