Tilbury (tĭl`bərē), part of the urban district of Thurrock Thurrock, district (1991 pop. 124,300), 63 sq mi (163 sq km), Essex, SE England, on the Thames River. The district includes Tilbury , which has large docks that are part of the Port of London.

, Essex, E England. Tilbury Fort originated under Henry VIII; it was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th cent. Queen Elizabeth I, in 1588, reviewed royal troops there when the Spanish Armada threatened England. The Tilbury docks, begun in 1882, make Tilbury the main container port of the Port of London.

We saw Tilbury Fort and remembered the Spanish Armada, Gravesend, Woolwich, and Greenwich-- places which I had heard of even in my country.
