Tillo, Aleksei Andreevich
Born Nov. 13 (25), 1839, in Kiev Province; died Dec. 30, 1899 (Jan. 11, 1900), in St. Petersburg. Russian geographer, cartographer, and geodesist. Lieutenant general (1894). Corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1892). After graduating from the Mikhail Artillery Academy in 1862, Tillo completed studies in the Geodetic Division of the Academy of the General Staff in St. Petersburg in 1866. On the basis of a large number of points with known elevations, he compiled hypsometric maps of European Russia, which were published in 1890 and 1896. He introduced the term “Central Russian Upland” and measured the lengths of the major Russian rivers. He also determined the difference between the levels of the Caspian and Aral seas.
