timesharingA multiuser computer environment that lets users initiate their own sessions and access selected databases as required. Today's networks of servers and client machines are all technically timesharing environments; however, the term originated in the 1960s when many terminals were first connected to a single mainframe, allowing programmers or students access to computing power at the same time.
