time-of-flight mass spectrometer [¦tīm əv ¦flīt ′mas spek′träm·əd·ər]
(spectroscopy)
A mass spectrometer in which all the positive ions of the material being analyzed are ejected into the drift region of the spectrometer tube with essentially the same energies, and spread out in accordance with their masses as they reach the cathode of a magnetic electron multiplier at the other end of the tube.
