Timofeev, Petr Vasil’evich 

Born June 12 (25), 1902, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in electronics and vacuum technology. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953).

Timofeev graduated from Moscow State University in 1925. He taught at the Moscow Higher Technical School from 1925 to 1928, at Moscow State University from 1926 to 1941, at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute from 1933 to 1941, and at the N. E. Zhukovskii Air Force Engineering Academy from 1945 to 1948. He became a professor in 1935. In 1928 he joined the staff of the All-Union Electrotechnical Institute.

Timofeev’s main works deal with the photoelectric effect, secondary electron emission, gas discharges, and electron optics. He designed a number of photocells, electron multipliers, electron tubes, and image converters. His inventions from 1933 to 1936 included television camera tubes, among them the image iconoscope.

Timofeev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and 1951. He has been awarded five orders and various medals.
