Timofei Vasilevich Levchuk

Levchuk, Timofei Vasil’evich 

Born Jan. 6 (19), 1912, in the village of Bystrovka, now in Ruzhin Raion, Zhitomir Oblast. Soviet director. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1969); People’s Artist of the USSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Levchuk graduated from the Kiev Film Institute in 1934 and became a director at the Kiev Feature Film Studio in 1949. He directed In the Steppes of the Ukraine (1952), Snowball Grove (1953), The Flame of Rage (1956), Ivan Franko (1956), The Law of the Antarctic (1963), The Cosmic Alloy (1964), Two Years Over the Precipice (1967), and The Error of Honoré de Balzac (1968). One of his major motion pictures was The Woman From Kiev (parts 1 and 2, 1958 and 1959; part 3, The Heirs, 1960). Levchuk was awarded the Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1971) for The Kotsiubinskii Family.

Levchuk became secretary of the board of the Cinematographers’ Union of the Ukrainian SSR in 1963. He was a deputy to the sixth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
