toggle switchA device that opens and closes an electric circuit. It uses a lever that is moved up and down; a light switch on the wall being a common example. Early computers, especially mainframes, often had many rows of toggle switches on their consoles, making them look very formidable. See toggle. toggle switch 1. an electric switch having a projecting lever that is manipulated in a particular way to open or close a circuit 2. a computer device that is used to turn a feature on or off toggle switch [′täg·əl ‚swich] (electricity) A small switch that is operated by manipulation of a projecting lever that is combined with a spring to provide a snap action for opening or closing a circuit quickly.
