Size: 17,000,000 acres.
Location: Southeast Alaska, comprising 80 percent of all land between the southern tip (near Ketchikan) to north of Yakutut. No road access; accessible by ferry, boat, or plane only. Nearby cities/towns include Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, and Yakutut.
Facilities: 3 visitor centers, 15 campgrounds, 150 cabins, picnic sites, trails, warming huts.
Activities: Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, berry picking, mushroom collecting, flightseeing tours (concession operated), whale watching, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, interpretive programs.
Special Features: Largest national forest in the U.S., three times larger than the next largest national forest. (At 17,000,000 acres, forest is larger than the states of Delaware or Rhode Island.) Features glaciers, mountains, waterways, and islands separated by straits and channels. Points of interest include Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area, and native arts displays at Southeast Alaska Discovery Center.
