Tonle SapLake, western Cambodia. The largest freshwater body in mainland Southeast Asia, it receives several tributaries as well as the floodwaters of the Mekong River. During the rainy season its area increases from 1,000 sq mi (2,600 sq km) to about 9,500 sq mi (25,000 sq km). At low water it is little more than a reed-infested swamp, with channels for fishing craft. A large carp-breeding and carp-harvesting industry there supports numerous floating fishing villages. The ruins of Angkor lie near its northwestern shore. Tonle Sap a lake in W central Cambodia, linked with the Mekong River by the Tonle Sap River.
