A defensive tower used for protection against enemy attack; a fortification once found in some Spanish Colonial communities.

Torreón 

a city in northern Mexico, in Coahuila State. Population, 244,000 (1974). Torreón is the transportation and commercial center of La Laguna, one of the major irrigated regions in Mexico. It has metalworking, nonferrous metallurgy, and chemical industries, the manufacture of textiles, and food-processing and cottonginning.

Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, has achieved ISO 14001 certification.
Grupo Penoles was forced to significantly curtail production at the Torreon plant for several months in 1999 because of improper storage and disposal of industrial wastes, which were linked to cases of severe lead poisoning in surrounding neighborhoods (see SourceMex, 1999-05-26).
