Penned by Torvalds himself with the help of writer David Diamond, the book tells the story of how it all began in 1981, when Torvalds' grandfather let him play with a computer. Once it was completed, Torvalds made the source code -- essentially the heart and soul of the software -- available for free on the Internet. In 1991, while a student at the University of Helsinki, Torvalds began work on Linux (LINN-ux), a new operating system similar to Unix. |
