Dzhatiev, Totyrbek Ismailovich
Born Dec. 15 (28), 1910, in the village of Sba, in present-day Dzhava Raion, Iuzhnaia Osettia Autonomous Oblast. Soviet Ossetian writer. Member of the CPSU from 1939.
Prior to his graduation from the M. Gorky Institute of Literature in 1941, Dzhatiev fought in the Russo-Finnish War (1939-40). He later served in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. In the novella Hero of the Revolution (1932), Dzhatiev depicts the struggle for the establishment of Soviet power in Iuzhnaia Osetiia. His novellas Volunteers (1940-4i),An Ossetian’s Honor (1945), and Two Friends (1952) describe the wartime exploits of Soviet people. Life in a kolkhoz village is the theme of both the novel On the Road of Life (1956) and the novella At Mount Zilga Khokh (1954). In the novel The Mountain Star (1961; Russian translation, 1962), Dzhatiev re-creates the character of the poet K. Khetagurov. Dzhatiev has been awarded four orders and various medals.
