Teutatesor ToutatesCeltic god, one of the three mentioned by the Roman poet Lucan in the 1st century AD, the other two being Esus and Taranis. Victims sacrificed to Teutates are believed to have been killed by being plunged headfirst into a vat filled with an unspecified liquid, possibly ale. He was identified with both Mercury and Mars. The Irish god Tuathal Techtmar, one of the legendary conquerors of Ireland, may have been another manifestation. How to thank TFD for its existence? | On September 29, a city-size asteroid (space rock that revolves around the sun and is smaller than a planet) named Toutatis (too-TAH-tiss) will pass within 1 million miles of Earth. Eric De Jong and animator Shigeru Suzuki of JPL combined several computer simulation and scientific visualization techniques to show the bizarre rotation and surface details of Toutatis as it tumbles erratically on its journey around the Sun. Sporting a complex tumbling motion and a chaotic orbit that defies long-term prediction, the potato-shaped near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis ranks as one of the stranger objects in the solar system. |
