Townsend, Mount, 7,260 ft (2,213 m) high, SE New South Wales, in the Australian Alps. The second tallest peak in Australia, it was explored by Polish Count Strzelecki. Thought to be Australia's highest peak, it was at first called Mt. Kosciusko, in honor of a Polish patriot. When a higher peak, the present Mt. Kosciusko, was discovered, the name was changed to Mt. Townsend. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
