Trás-os-Montes (trä`z zhmôn'tĕsh), former province of NE Portugal, comprising the districts of Bragança and Vila Real. The capital was Bragança Bragança (bragän`sə) or Braganza..... The terrain is rough and the winters cold except along the Douro River in the hilly vineyard district, which yields the famed port wine grapes, and in warm tributary valleys, where olives and other crops are grown.
