Trípolis (trē`pôlĭs), town (1991 pop. 22,463), capital of Arcadia prefecture, S Greece, in the Peloponnesus. It is a transportation and agricultural center and a summer resort. A variety of light manufactures are produced. Founded c.1467 near the sites of the ancient cities of Mantinea, Pallantium, and Tegea, it was the seat of the Ottoman governors of Morea (the Peloponnesus). The town was devastated (1825) in the Greek War of Independence. It was formerly known as Tripolitza. TrípolisCity (pop., 2001: 28,976), southern Greece, the commercial centre of the central Peloponnese. It was founded in the 14th century AD as Drobolitza to replace the ancient cities of Pallantium, Tegea, and Mantinea. Rebuilt in 1770, it became the seat of the local Ottoman pasha. The city prospered until 1828, when it was destroyed in the War of Greek Independence. It was rebuilt after 1834. How to thank TFD for its existence?
