(biochemistry)
Any of a group of enzymes that participate in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins by transferring one sugar at a time from suitable donors to particular acceptors.

In the April 16 SCIENCE, the researchers suggest that the sugars inhibit enzymes called transglycosylases, which help connect the cell wall components together.
First, the compound directly inhibits bacterial transglycosylase, which is the enzyme that forms the glycan backbone of the cell wall.
