2. (of a flute, etc.) held almost at right angles to the player's mouth, so that the breath passes over a hole in the side to create a vibrating air column within the tube of the instrument
3. Astronomy another word for tangential (sense 2)

A structural feature, often ornamental, enclosing the sides and top of a doorway, window, fireplace, or similar opening. The top piece or lintel is called the transverse and the side pieces or jambs the ascendants.

Aetiology and pathophysiology Evolution The absence of the posterior rectus sheath below the arcuate line and a weak fascia transversalis resisting intra-abdominal pressure predisposes to the development of hernias.
The mechanism may be stretching and tearing of the transversalis fascia and conjoint tendon implicating a reduction in internal hip rotation and a weakening of the posterior inguinal wall.
