On the southwestern border of NC, southwest of Asheville; organized Feb 15, 1861 from Jacksonville and Henderson counties. Name Origin: From Latin trans plus sylva 'across the woods.' The name may also echo that of the province of Transylvania, now in Rumania, but more probably it is literary or promotional name.

Area (sq mi): 380.56 (land 378.39; water 2.17). Pop per sq mi: 78.30.
Pop 2005: 29,626. State rank: 70. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.00%; 1990-2000 14.90%. Pop 2000: 29,334 (White 93.10%; Black or African American 4.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 2.30%. Median age: 43.90.
Income 2000: per capita $20,767; median household $38,587; Pop below poverty level: 9.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,234-$25,280.
Unemployment 2004: 7.00%. Change from 2000: 2.30%. Median travel time to work: 22.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.60%.
