On the central western border of MN, south of Fargo, ND; established Feb 20, 1862 from Wilkin County (then called Toombs County). Name Origin: For Lake Traverse on the southwestern border of the county; from the French lac travers, a translation of the Siouan name Mdehdakinyan 'lake lying crosswise' [to Big Stone and Lac Qui Parle lakes].
