Trinius, Karl Bernhard

(Karl Antonovich Trinius). Born Mar. 7,1778, in Eisleben; died Feb. 29 (Mar. 12), 1844, in St. Petersburg. Russian botanist of German descent. Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1823; corresponding member from 1810).

Trinius graduated from the University of Göttingen in 1802 and worked in Russia beginning in 1809. In 1824 he became the founder and first director of the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences, which was officially opened in 1835. His main works deal with the taxonomy and morphology of the higher plants, mainly grasses. Trinius described many new species of plants.
