Seat of government for Todd County. Name Origin: For Bartlett Tripp (1842-1911), promoter of SD's statehood, U.S. minister to Austria-Hungary (1893), chief justice of the Dakota Territory (1886-89), and trustee of Yankton College. Area (sq mi): 1617.40 (land 1613.52; water 3.88). Pop per sq mi: 3.80. Pop 2005: 6,065. State rank: 30. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.70%; 1990-2000 -7.10%.
