Trofimenko, Sergei Georgievich 

Born Sept. 10 (22), 1899, in Briansk; died Oct. 16, 1953, in Moscow. Soviet military commander. Colonel general (1944); Hero of the Soviet Union (Sept. 13,1944). Member of the Communist Party from 1918.

Trofimenko joined the Red Army in 1919, and fought in the Civil War (1918–20) as deputy commander of a machine-gun detachment. He completed the Vystrel courses in 1926 and graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1932. He graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1937 and completed the academy’s higher academic training courses in 1949. He served in the Soviet-Finnish War (1939–40) as a deputy chief of staff of the Seventh Army. In the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) he commanded the Medvezh’egorsk operational group on the Karelian Front (1941–42) and the Thirty-second Army (March-June 1942), Seventh Army (July 1942-January 1943), and Twenty-seventh Army (1943–45) on the Karelian, Northwestern, Steppe, Voronezh, First Ukrainian, Second Ukrainian, and Third Ukrainian fronts. After the war he commanded troops of the Tbilisi (1945–16), Byelorussian (1946–49), and Northern Caucasian (from 1949) military districts.

Trofimenko was a deputy to the second and third convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded four Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Suvo-rov First Class, the Order of Kutuzov First Class, the Order of Bogdan Khmel’nitskii First Class, and various medals.
