a national park in southeastern Kenya, in the basin of the Athi and Tsavo rivers. The park, which in 1976 covered an area of 2.08 million hectares, was organized in 1948 in the Eastern and Coastal provinces. The eastern part is a park savanna, with a predominance of baobabs and various spurges and acacias. The western part has volcanic landforms, including streams of congealed lava and volcanic cones. Tsavo National Park is an animal preserve with elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, buffalo, and various species of antelope.
