Tsigal’, Vladimir Efimovich
Born Sept. 17 (30), 1917, in Odessa. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1978). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1952. Tsigal’ studied under V. N. Domogatskii, L. V. Shervud, and A. T. Matveev at the Moscow Art, Institute from 1937 to 1942 and from 1946 to 1948. He has executed monuments, portraits, and genre compositions. His early works are characterized by careful development of motif and an intricate style. Later, however, Tsigal’ turned to more generalized forms, characterized by restrained vigor and sometimes bold expressiveness. He embodies the complex emotional and psychological world of heroic men and women by depicting them as inspired, romantic figures and by asserting their noble civic ideals. Notable works by Tsigal’ include the monuments V, Lenin as a Gymnasium Student (Ul’ianovsk), Lieutenant General D. M. Karbyshev (Mauthausen, Austria; marble, unveiled 1962), R. Sorge (bronze and granite, 1967, All-Union Industrial Arts Combine, Moscow), To the Soviet and Polish Soldiers Who Fell in Battle While Fighting the Fascists (Lenino, Byelorussian SSR), and Anne Frank (bronze, 1969). Tsigal’ received the State Prize of the USSR in 1950. REFERENCEValerius, S. S. Skul’ptor Vladimir Efimovich Tsigal’. Leningrad, 1963.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
