Tsimliansk Reservoir
a reservoir formed by the dam of the Tsimliansk Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Don River in Rostov and Volgograd oblasts, RSFSR. The reservoir was filled from 1952 to 1955. It has an area of 2,700 sq km, a volume of 23.9 cu m, and a length of 260 km. The maximum width is 38 km, and the average depth is 8.8 m. Bays up to 5 km wide and 15–30 km long have formed at the estuaries of the major tributaries of the Don, including the Tsimla and Chir rivers. The reservoir was created as a part of the Volga-Don Ship Canal and has regulated discharge for several years. Upon completion of all planned work, the reservoir will irrigate 600,000 hectares and flood 2 million hectares of fertile land. There is fishing for European bream, blue bream, and pike. The cities of Kalach-on-Don, Tsimliansk, and Volgodonsk are situated on the reservoir. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
