Tsinamdzgvrishvili, Mikhail Dorofeevich 

Born May 10 (22), 1882, in the village of Surami, now in Khashuri Raion, Georgian SSR; died Dec. 28, 1956, in Tbilisi. Soviet internist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1946).

Tsinamdzgvrishvili graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Kharkov in 1910. He worked at the university until 1915, at which time he moved to Tbilisi. He headed the subdepartment of diagnostics in the medical department of the University of Tbilisi from 1921 to 1930 (professor, from 1924) and the subdepartment of internal medicine at the Tbilisi Medical Institute from 1930. He founded the USSR’s first institute of clinical and experimental cardiology in 1946 and served as its director from the time of its founding to 1956. The institute was named after him in 1957.

Tsinamdzgvrishvili’s principal works deal with hypertension among young people, the classification of hypertensive disease, the genesis of renal hypertension, the clinical study of congenital heart defects, and myocardial pathology. He served as president of the Georgian Society of Internists and was an honorary member of the All-Union Society of Internists. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
