Tsugaru

Tsugaru 

a strait between the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido connecting the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean. Tsugaru Strait is approximately 110 km long and 18.5 km wide. The minimum depth of the fairway is 131 m. The strait does not freeze over. The main port is Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido.

Part of the Tsushima Warm Current flows from the Sea of Japan into the Pacific Ocean through the Tsugaru Strait, then flows southward along the coast of Sanriku district, Tohoku (Ueno & Yamazaki 1987).
By the time he reaches the open water of the Tsugaru Strait, the wind has turned into a gale and the waves grow higher with every assault on the bow of his boat.
To the Editor: Alveolar echinococcosis in humans is endemic in Japan; however, the causal agent, Echinococcus multilocularis, has been restricted to the northernmost insular prefecture of Hokkaido, where the Tsugaru Strait acts as a natural physical barrier against migration to the mainland.
