Tsulukidze, Aleksandr Grigor’evich 

Born Nov. 1 (13), 1876, in the village of Khoni, now the city of Tsulukidze, Georgian SSR; died June 8 (21), 1905, in Kutaisi; buried in Khoni. Literary scholar and leader in the Russian revolutionary movement.

The son of a member of the dvorianstvo (nobility or gentry), Tsulukidze joined the Kutaisi Social Democratic group in 1896 and conducted revolutionary work in Tbilisi and Baku. From 1897 to 1899 he was an auditor in the law faculty of Moscow University and a member of a students’ Marxist circle. In 1900 and 1901 he directed a workers’ strike in Tbilisi, led a workers’ circle in Batumi, and contributed to the newspaper Brdzola (The Struggle). In 1902, Tsulukidze took part in the establishment of the Kutaisi and Imereti-Mingrelia committees, and in 1903 he helped organize the Caucasian Union Committee of the RSDLP.

After the Second Congress of the RSDLP, Tsulukidze was a Bolshevik. He was one of the founders and editors of the newspaper Proletariatis brdzola (Struggle of the Proletariat) and the author of a number of theoretical works criticizing the views of legal Marxists, bourgeois nationalists, and Mensheviks. Tsulukidze was one of the first Georgian Marxist literary scholars.
