Tsyrenzhap Sampilov

Sampilov, Tsyrenzhap Sampilovich 

Born 1893 in the ulus (Tatar settlement) of Domno-Eravna, in what is now the Buriat ASSR; died July 31,1953, in Ulan-Ude. Soviet painter; founder of realistic easel painting in Buriat art. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1940). Member of the CPSU from 1942.

Sampilov studied at the Moscow VKhUTEIN (Higher Art and Technical Institute) from 1927 to 1930. He then settled in Ulan-Ude, where he taught at the Institute of Culture of the Buriat ASSR from 1930 to 1935. Sampilov’s paintings express a joyful world view by means of simple and truthful imagery. His work is represented in Moscow’s Museum of Art of the Oriental Peoples by Love in the Steppes (1925 or 1927), The Herdsman (1938), and In the Valley of Zhargalantui (1945). His paintings The Partisans’ Entrance into the City of Verkhneudinsk in 1920 (1940) and The Herd (1950) are in the Ts. S. Sampilov Buriat Republic Art Museum in Ulan-Ude.

Sampilov was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Badge of Honor.
