Groote Schuur (khr `tə skür) [Afrik.,=large barn], estate, Cape Town, Western Cape, SW South Africa. The main building of the estate, which is a good example of Dutch colonial architecture, was erected on the site of a large barn dating from 1657. It once was the home of Cecil Rhodes and is now the residence of South Africa's prime minister. The Univ. of Cape Town is on the grounds of the estate; in 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first human heart transplant operation there. |
