In central CA, southeast of Fresno; organized Apr 20, 1852, from Mariposa County. Name Origin: For Tulare Lake, Mexican-Spanish 'rush' or 'reed,' perhaps originally from Aztec tullin or tollin, 'cattail' or 'bulrush.'

Area (sq mi): 4839.09 (land 4823.97; water 15.12). Pop per sq mi: 85.20.
Pop 2005: 410,874. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.60%; 1990-2000 18.00%. Pop 2000: 368,021 (White 41.80%; Black or African American 1.60%; Hispanic or Latino 50.80%; Asian 3.30%; Other 37.10%). Foreign born: 22.60%. Median age: 29.20.
Income 2000: per capita $14,006; median household $33,983; Pop below poverty level: 23.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,567-$21,388.
Unemployment 2004: 11.50%. Change from 2000: -3.90%. Median travel time to work: 21.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 11.80%.
