Name Origin: For the Tuolumne River, named for either the Central Miwok or Yokut Indians, of Penutian linguistic stock. Name is believed to be a corruption of Indiantalmalamne 'cluster of stone wigwams': they lived in caves or recesses in the rocks. Variously spelled Taulamne , Tahualamne , and Tavalames .
