Tupolev, Aleksei Andreevich
Born May 20, 1925, in Moscow. Soviet aircraft designer. Hero of Socialist Labor (1972); doctor of technical sciences (1963); professor (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1959. Son of A. N. Tupolev. A. A. Tupolev graduated from the Moscow Institute of Aviation in 1949. In 1942 he joined the staff of his father’s experimental design office, where he became a senior designer in 1963 and chief designer in 1973. He was first assigned his own design projects in 1957, and he directed the development of several supersonic aircraft, including the Tu-144 supersonic passenger plane, which was designed by him and his father and built in 1968. He developed special methods for designing and testing the supersonic passenger plane. Tupolev was a deputy to the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1967, and he has been awarded three Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
