Tur, Aleksandr Fedorovich 

Born Sept. 3 (15), 1894, in the city of Novgorod-Severskii, in what is now Chernigov Oblast; died July 24, 1974, in Leningrad. Soviet pediatrician. Academician at the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1952). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1947).

A student of M. S. Maslov, Tur graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1919. In 1930 he became head of the department of child physiology and dietetics at the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute for the Health Care of Mother and Child. Beginning in 1939, he was head of the department of introductory and hospital pediatrics of the Leningrad Institute of Pédiatrie Medicine. His main works dealt with problems of the newborn, hematology, and the nutrition of healthy and sick children. Eight editions of The Manual on the Dietetics of Young Children were published under Tur’s editorship.

Tur was chairman of the All-Russian Society of Pediatricians from 1958. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1970 for a series of works dealing with the reduction of child morbidity and mortality rates. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals. Tur was also an honorary member of the J. Purkinje Scientific Society in Czechoslovakia.
