turbofan 1. a type of by-pass engine in which a large fan driven by a turbine and housed in a short duct forces air rearwards around the exhaust gases in order to increase the propulsive thrust 2. an aircraft driven by one or more turbofans 3. the ducted fan in such an engine turbofan [′tər·bō‚fan] (aerospace engineering) An air-breathing jet engine in which additional propulsive thrust is gained by extending a portion of the compressor or turbine blades outside the inner engine case. | Owners of more than 500 Honeywell TFE731 family turbofan engines are being called upon by the US Federal Aviation. Combining Honda's original small turbofan engine technology and GE's sixty years of experience in the development and manufacture of jet engines, the GE Honda HF120 is the most fuel efficient engine in its class; and while there are currently no emission regulations for small turbofan engines, the HF120 is expected to surpass the future anticipated emissions standards by as much as 20 percent. Turbofan engines were then still new, and for simplicity had initially been developed by adding a turbine to power an aftmounted fan. |
