Turboprop Engine

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Turboprop Engine

an aircraft gas-turbine engine in which primary thrust is developed by a propeller and additional thrust (up to 8–12 percent) is produced by a gas jet flowing from a jet nozzle. Turboprop engines are used in subsonic airplanes and in helicopters.

Figure 1. Schematic of a helicopter turboprop engine: (1) helicopter rotor, (2) reduction gear, (3) air intake, (4) axial-flow compressor, (5) combustion chamber, (6) turbines for driving the compressor and the helicopter rotor, (7) exhaust nozzle

Atmospheric air that enters the engine in flight is compressed in an air intake and further compressed in a turbocompressor. The air is then supplied to a combustion chamber into which a liquid chemical fuel, usually aviation kerosene, is injected. The gases formed during the combustion of the fuel expand in a turbine, which turns the compressor and the propeller; the final expansion of the gases occurs in the jet nozzle. A reduction gear is used to match the rotational speeds of the turbocompressor rotor and the propeller or, in a helicopter, to transmit torque to the helicopter rotor, whose axis is at an angle to the axis of the turbine. In helicopters the compressor and the helicopter rotor are usually driven by turbines that are not mechanically connected. (See alsoAIRCRAFT ENGINE.)

The Il-18 is a passenger aircraft equipped with four turboprop engines.
In the past five years, for example, such transfers have included: * PW150B turboprop engines for Y-8F600 transport/ KJ-200 Airborne Early Warning aircraft; * PT6B-67A turboprop engines for the Z-8 multirole transport helicopter; * PW-206C engines for A109 civilian and military helicopters; and * PT6C-67E turboshaft engines for the EC175/Z15 medium helicopter.
Turboprop engines offer special attractions for military transports in providing outstanding cruise economy (with only a small speed penalty relative to high-bypass turbofans) in combination with short take-off and landing performance.
