Turner, Richmond K. (Kelly) (1885–1961) naval officer; born in Portland, Ore. He served on battleships during World War I and was on the staff of the Naval War College (1935–38). He commanded the amphibious forces that launched the grueling Guadalcanal campaign (1942). He planned and directed amphibious landings at Makin and Tarawa (1943), in the Marshall Islands (1944), and at Iwo Jima and Okinawa (1945).
